The Camellia House at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay just turned 100-years-old; wow! And, to pay tribute to this milestone, a birthday party celebration is being held at this year’s Camellia Festival, showcasing the camellia blooms of more than 200 camellia shrubs and trees and featuring an array of activities throughout the arboretum’s grounds, on Feb. 19.

Waddle this way to spot a seal

If the thought of being cooped up inside during these chilly months has you searching for things to get you out from under your blankets, the chance to see some seals in their natural habitat could be just the ticket for you. The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. (CRESLI) hosts two seals walks this weekend, on Jan. 7 and 8. However, if you can’t make it, the walks are being offered through May 7.

Visions of sugar-plums dance before you in “The Nutcracker”

Every year during the holidays – between the shopping, gift wrapping and parties – I try and make time to see a childhood favorite of mine, “The Nutcracker.” After seeing it for the first time at 7-years-old, it has become a December staple for me. Well, I’m in luck (and so are you), since the ballet is coming to the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University, Dec. 16-19.
